Bonnyrigg Pharmacy is bound by the Australian Privacy Principles set out in the Privacy Act 1988.

Bonnyrigg Pharmacy is committed to providing quality services to you and this policy outlines our ongoing obligations to you in respect of how we manage your Personal Information.

We have adopted the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Act). The APPs govern the way in which we collect, use, disclose, store, secure and dispose of your Personal Information.

About the information we hold

To help meet your health care needs we may hold and use records, including your name and address details, your medication record and other health care information that you or your treating doctor or other health practitioner may need to provide to us. This personal information will not be disclosed to overseas recipients and will be used only for the purposes of meeting your health care needs, unless you consent to its use for other purposes, or the law permits its use for other purposes.

Much of the information we ask for is because the law requires it to be collected. For example, this applies to prescription details that we are required to collect in accordance with relevant legislation including the National Health Act 1953 (and its regulations) and the poisons laws as in force in the Australian States and Territories. In some jurisdictions, we also are required to collect some information such as your driver’s licence number when supplying medicines containing pseudoephedrine.

For some services we will not need to collect any personal information. You need to be aware that if you do not provide us with certain information about yourself, in some circumstances we may be unable to provide a service that you require.

 

Our disclosure and information practices

 

In accordance with other related policies on confidentiality, computer access and security, personal information we hold is stored in a secure manner and is not disclosed to any other person or organisation without your consent. However, we may need to provide your information to other health service providers if it is necessary to help us to provide services to you.

Your personal information may be disclosed in specific general situations which involve:

  • Serious threats to life, health or safety of any individual, or to public health or safety

  • Suspected unlawful activity or serious misconduct (relating to Bonnyrigg Pharmacy’s functions or activities)

 

Equally, we may be required to disclose personal information in permitted health situations such as:

  • For certain research and other purposes

  • Disclosing your genetic information to lessen or prevent serious threat to life, health or safety of your genetic relative

  • Disclosing your health information to a responsible person for you (a ‘responsible person’ under the Act can be a parent, spouse, de facto, a child or sibling of 18 years or older, a person who has intimate relations with the individual, a person who has been nominated by the individual as an emergency contact, or a person exercising power of attorney)

 

Special pharmaceutical services and activities

Some activities such as Medication Management services or research activities will have privacy practices and consent forms specific to the activity. If Bonnyrigg Pharmacy is part of the team involved in that activity, we are required to meet our privacy obligations for that activity whether they arise under the Privacy Act or otherwise.

 

Employee confidentiality compliance

We, the Bonnyrigg Pharmacy team, understand that, in the course of their duties in this pharmacy, have access to confidential and personal information about its patients and staff and other confidential information relating to the pharmacy business. We understand that it is a condition of our employment that we must take all reasonable action to not disclose this information in any way. We understand that, as an employee/staff member of this pharmacy, we must meet the obligations under all relevant legislation including the APPs and the Act.

 

How you can gain access to information
 

You can request access to personal information we may hold about you. If you make such a request, we will ask you to complete a form for this purpose. You can also request that corrections be made to your information we may hold about you. There is no charge for lodging a request to access your information. However, we may make a small charge for our time involved in providing this information and for associated costs such as photocopying.

 

Direct marketing

If we hold information about you, for example, as part of a loyalty program, this information may be used for marketing purposes. If you do not wish to receive marketing communications from Bonnyrigg Pharmacy, you can tell us and we will take steps to have your name removed from our pharmacy’s loyalty program marketing list.
